Energy Efficiency and Economics for The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

MJS
Dennis Laskaskie - Facility Manager and Maintenance Supervisor

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel completed a base load energy reduction project that provided a staggering return on investment in late 2004. "What got our attention immediately, when we started looking at energy efficiency lighting, was the large return on investment, which was over 85 percent per annum," stated Dennis Laskaskie, Facility Manager and Maintenance Supervisor. "In fact, when I presented the budget request for the energy-efficient project to our CFO, he said the 14-month payback made the project a 'no-brainer.'"

Over the lifetime of the technology, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel print facility will save over 19.4 million kilowatt-hours (kWh). Along with that, the company will reduce electricity demand by over 147 kW, which is enough electricity to power 147 homes.

"We replaced two-year-old lighting fixtures and still saw significant enough savings to make the change," commented Laskaskie. "As important to us, we have improved the workplace environment for our employees. In fact, many employees have noticed that they felt less tired at the end of the day."

"Through this base load energy reduction project, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel is making a tangible impact on Milwaukee County and Wisconsin's environment by saving over 19.4 million kWh over the next 20 years, - commented Neal Verfuerth, President and CEO of Orion Energy Systems. "In addition, they have improved their workplace environment with 30 percent more footcandles and a better quality lighting, plus they have improved their bottom line."

Good for Business, Good for the Environment

Long known for its environmental stewardship, Quad/Graphics, the world's largest privately held commercial printer, completed a major base load energy reduction project at its printing facilities nationwide, a project initiated in 2002. Quad/Graphics has completed all of its printing facilities, which are located in Hartford, Lomira, Pewaukee, Sussex and West Allis, Wisconsin; Saratoga Springs,New York; The Rock, Georgia; and Martinsburg, West Virginia. The project is saving the company 35 million kWh annually. As a result, the Wisconsin-based printer will take almost three megawatts of power off the electrical grid, enough electricity to power 3,750 homes according to the EPA formula.

"Quad/Graphics has long believed that what's good for business is good for the environment, and this project is proof positive," said Thomas A. Quadracci, President and CEO of Quad/Graphics. "Our employees are benefiting from better quality light, and the community is benefiting from a reduction in electrical use and its associated impacts. As a good environmental steward, we will continue on this type of journey, applying new technology as it becomes available, to protect the environment."

Quad/Graphics' project is expected to have a profound environmental impact by removing 607,320 tons of carbon dioxide, 2,231 tons of sulfur dioxide, 5,177 tons of nitrous oxides and 93.6 pounds of mercury. The project has also had a major impact on their bottom line as it has saved them $2 million each year since completion - totaling $10 million.

"We appreciate Quad's willingness to be an early adopter of our technology platform born here in Wisconsin," commented Orion President and CEO Neal Verfuerth. "As one of Wisconsin's premier companies, Quad/Graphics always has had a strong reputation for its environmental leadership. We're honored to be chosen by them for this large-scale base load reduction project."
